“The war photographers most fervent wish is for unemployment”

Robert Capa - Hungarian-American war photographer

The art project I am working on will rely on both words and images to tell Jack’s story. While we have a lot of words, we have limited images. These three sections are a visual archive resource for that effort. Each section has a slightly different agenda that is described below. A big thanks to Jim Emme for his work in scanning and saving many of these items for the family.

These archive only includes images of Jack. The index takes a shot at chronology. We have very few images of Jack during his time of service. The last few images were taken in England and are referred to in one of his letters.

This archive focuses on images of physical places Jack visited during his service and is grouped into three galleries covering the period from February 1943 to July 1944.

“USA” takes Jack from High School through Basic Training at various locations in the United States. “United Kingdom” covers Jack’s deployment to Wales, relocation to England and further preparation for the D-Day invasion. “France” covers Jack’s arrival at Omaha Beach up to the liberation of Paris.

This archive is a landing place for any objects that helped build Jack’s story. Each item comes with a second page that gives more details regarding the significance of the item.
